All porcelain tiles used in ceramic facade cladding must be rectified. Deviations from a right angle and unrectified tiles will cause visual imperfections in the ceramic facade installation. Additionally, all porcelain tiles to be used on the same facade must be rectified to the same dimensions. For example, a 600×1200 mm rectified tile cannot be used next to a 595×1195 mm rectified tile. Furthermore, the porcelain tiles used on the facade must be the same shade or differ by only an imperceptible amount. Shade variations will cause visual imperfections in ceramic facade installations. Furthermore, the thickness and concavity of these tiles must be below TSE standards. In facade construction, the flatness of ceramic tiles is one of the primary selection criteria. In ceramic facade applications, it is recommended—though not mandatory—to use products reinforced with fiber mesh. The fiber mesh prevents the spalling of cracks that may result from external impact, even on buildings several stories high. The fiber-reinforced mesh provides strength comparable to that of tempered glass in ceramic applications.
The surface finishes of ceramic (porcelain body) products used in exterior applications can be matte, glossy, or semi-gloss, depending on preference. The use of textured surfaces is not recommended in areas prone to heavy dust accumulation. In addition to these finishes, the most popular products include metallic, lappato, matte HDR, concrete-textured matte, and wood-grain matte finishes. For products with very white surfaces, such as “Super White,” matte or embossed finishes should not be selected.
