Facade Ceramics

Ceramic tiles to be used in facade application must have porcelain mass. This detail applies to all applications to be used in outdoor conditions. Due to the porcelain characteristic of the tile, water absorption is at minimum level. Therefore, frost, etc. burst, crack, etc. under weather conditions. prevents problems.

Ceramics used in facade systems are manufactured in various thicknesses and dimensions depending on structural requirements and installation details. The three most commonly used types of ceramics are:

Ultra Slim Ceramic

These porcelain ceramics are manufactured in 3 mm and 5 mm thicknesses and in extra-large 1000×3000 mm formats. They offer high strength thanks to fiberglass reinforcement. Their lightweight construction makes installation easy. A seamless appearance is achieved on large surfaces with minimal use of grout.

Slim Ceramic

These are porcelain ceramic tiles that are 5 mm thick and typically manufactured in 600×1200 mm dimensions. Depending on building height, wind load, and the installation system, they can be used with or without mesh backing. This product line offers both aesthetic and cost-effective solutions and is an ideal choice for small- and medium-scale projects.

Standard Porcelain Tiles

With a thickness ranging from 9 to 11 mm, these ceramics can be safely used in mechanical mounting systems thanks to their high static strength. The appropriate thickness and system should be selected based on the climate conditions where the project is located. Thanks to their durability, color stability, and long service life, they are a classic solution for exterior facades.

other properties of facade ceramics

All porcelain tiles used in ceramic facade cladding must be rectified. Deviations from a right angle and unrectified tiles will cause visual imperfections in the ceramic facade installation. Additionally, all porcelain tiles to be used on the same facade must be rectified to the same dimensions. For example, a 600×1200 mm rectified tile cannot be used next to a 595×1195 mm rectified tile. Furthermore, the porcelain tiles used on the facade must be the same shade or differ by only an imperceptible amount. Shade variations will cause visual imperfections in ceramic facade installations. Furthermore, the thickness and concavity of these tiles must be below TSE standards. In facade construction, the flatness of ceramic tiles is one of the primary selection criteria. In ceramic facade applications, it is recommended—though not mandatory—to use products reinforced with fiber mesh. The fiber mesh prevents the spalling of cracks that may result from external impact, even on buildings several stories high. The fiber-reinforced mesh provides strength comparable to that of tempered glass in ceramic applications.

The surface finishes of ceramic (porcelain body) products used in exterior applications can be matte, glossy, or semi-gloss, depending on preference. The use of textured surfaces is not recommended in areas prone to heavy dust accumulation. In addition to these finishes, the most popular products include metallic, lappato, matte HDR, concrete-textured matte, and wood-grain matte finishes. For products with very white surfaces, such as “Super White,” matte or embossed finishes should not be selected.

Preferred Ceramic Properties in Facade Applications

Homogeneous surfaces, concrete surfaces, metallic surfaces, wood textured surfaces, travertine and marble textured surfaces are preferred as surfaces. Also in color It is seen that gray, beige, anthracite and white are preferred in order.
